Orofacial Myotherapy

What is Orofacial Myotherapy?

Orofacial Myotherapy is a holistic approach to rehabilitation of mouth, jaw and throat dysfunction.

What is the goal of Orofacial Myotherapy?

The goal of Orofacial Myotherapy is to assist you in creating, restoring and maintaining normal orofacial muscle function. When the orofacial muscles are functioning well the resting position of the tongue sits gently sealed against the roof of the mouth and the posture of the jaw is aligned and relaxed. This means that you are able to chew, swallow, breathe and speak with ease!

This rehabilitation program will include manual therapy aimed at restoring normal soft tissue tension. It will also include an exercise program tailored to your specific needs.

What are some of the symptoms you may be experiencing?

If your orofacial muscle and soft tissue patterns are less than optimal, you may be experiencing a variety of different symptoms or functional issues. These include:

•  A lisp or difficulty articulating particular sounds
•  Challenges with speech development
•  TMJ dysfunction
•  Jaw position and teeth alignment issues
•  Headaches
•  Stomach distress (from swallowing air)
•  Airway obstruction issues (such as sleep apnea)
•  Swallowing issues

How do Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMD’s) occur?

Most of the time OMD’s occur as a result of an unconscious habit of mouth breathing over nasal breathing. As this is not a normal movement pattern for the muscles, they have to learn to adapt and this creates disordered movement patterns. Over time this can contribute significantly to postural issues, jaw pain and headaches and dental/orthodontic issues.

What are some of the common issues we see in Children and Adults?

•  Open mouth posture
•  Poor posture
•  Crooked and crowded teeth
•  Incorrect chewing function
•  Altered speech patterns
•  Asymmetrical appearance of the face or lips
•  Tongue thrusting (an incorrect swallowing pattern)
•  Incorrect tongue rest position
•  Painful ears when flying
